UiTM Paint Day Mini Paintball Tournament Pictures

UiTM Paint Day Mini Paintball Tournament

Held on 21st - 22nd March 2009 the mini tourney attracted 14 teams from UiTM and all of them are students. The was was held as one of UiTM Paint Day program and organized by Jabatan Perwakilan Kolej, UiTM. The mini tourney adopt knock-out 5 men center flag format and each game is based on best of 3 games (if the score is 1 - 1, final set will be one on one game).

Before the tourney begins, a short (one and a half hour briefing) was held and what makes it special, the Campus Director also attended the briefing and he was excited to have the mini tourney organized in UiTM. He even tried to shoot some paints.

On the first day all qualifier games was played and continued on teh second day for quater, semi and final games. The games... well they are beginners, and they didn't ask for clinic, so i can't say much about their games. It's a really new player's style of play. But there's two teams that catched my attention (although they do not impressed me much). One is a team that started only with three players (i called them the "purple men " because they wear purple shirt) later to become champion and the other one is the ROTU team. The "purple men" were playing with their hearts. They combined well and manage to control their field. They are not that fast but they succeed in delaying their opponent and grabbed their win desperately. One thing i thought, they have nothing to lose. That's made them played with no fear and that made them champion. The ROTU team, they played well to as one team (because they've already trained that way) but new in paintball game. They are good i one game and that game was the best game in the tournament. Before their semifinal match i've talk to them and explained them the concept of paintball. It was just a simple explaination. I asked them to concentrate on the objective of the game, "to capture the flag and bring back safely", the backs watch for forward, the forward make their kill and grab the flag. Although they lost the semi in the final set (one on one) but they showed they real paintball gameplay in their second set. It was the fastest game adn the best game. Game on the back showered paints to the opponent forcing them to take rest behind bunker and the forward rushed toward the center and grabbed the flag and run off fast. Their opponent can't do nothing. They do not know it was game over already. That was a great game for a beginner.

The second day, a group of 30+ bikers from Brunei and Kuching joined the event. The stampeded UiTM with their big bikes. It was a bonus for that event. Thank to our crew, Amir he manage to ask his father to bring his bikers legion to join UiTM. They also played three friendly games (Brunei bikers vs Kuching biker)s before stopping due to heavy wind and rain, but still they made the event special. The result, Brunei bikers lead by 2 - 1.

What can i say more... although we were short of some bunkers and equipment (due to some problems before event) the tourney was great. The students were happy and excited. They enjoyed their game, although some small objection heard between games, it was steadily settled down and the tourney was a success. The AJK's were also great. They were very supporting and helpful.

My Paintball Clinic and Mini Tournament

For me, manging/organising a paintball clinic/mini tournament is simple. It is simple but not that easy. We have to manage our schedule, the organiser, the participants, our equiptment, logistic arragement, etc.
Based on my experience, our crew is one of the most important element. We need a team of experienced people that enjoy their work and know what to with minimum supervision. And most of us (clinic/tourney organiser) already have this.

But... it is a little bit hard when dealing with really new beginners. They don't really get the rule yet... they are extra excited, they want to impress people, etc. It is important at the time of the briefing we stressed repeatedly on safety. Stress more on wearing facemask, one on one situation, penalties and game procedures. But the way we deliver the message is important. We need to capture their attention and still make them excited. From time to time in the briefing we stressed the safety part. We warn them of the penalties for abiding the rules.

Our team of Reff must strictly hold the rule in field. Do not hesitate to apply penalties. In our clinics and tournament it is usual to see penalties applied onto player (one for one, etc.), but we explained to them after the game. That is why we stressed it repeatedly in briefing.

That is a little bit of my small knowledge that i want to share. Maybe other organiser is better and more organized, experinced.. i really want to know how you do it. I like to learn from experienced people.

My view of a 5 men speedball basic tactic

Speedball for me is a fast and action packed kind of painball game. We need to be alert at all time. Vision is important because we must know the position of own team mates and opponent. Beside individual skills, trust is one of the main cores of speedball along with understanding. When have trust we feel free to move. When we have understanding we know where to go. Don’t have these then we are playing blind and with fear.

My Basic 5 men Tactic

The most popular format used in Malaysia today is 5 men format. My basic tactic in 5 men speedball is 3 back players and 2 forwards. One of the back players (on either side) is going to be the Roberto Carlos of paintball which means that he/she will overlap through the flank. Eventually the game tactics will change to 2 back players and 3 forwards. The forwards position is 2 forward on one side and the other one on the other side. This means that forward players are divided into 2 teams. Back players will support with their fire power. The two team of forward are Team Alphathe attacking team/strong side (2 players) and Team Beta the support team/weak side (1 player).Team alpha role is to take out opponent’s center and left or side back player depending on which side team alpha position themselves. Team beta will takes out opponent’s forward players with the support from two back players. The team’s back player will delay or pin down the opponent’s forwards. They also try to make opponent’s back players busy so that team alpha can eliminate them. This tactic needs to be practice a lot because it’s not an easy task. Movements of players need to be coordinated well and wisely so they can position themselves correctly.

MJC field

Aerial view of MJS paintball field.
Unfortunately now still in rainy season.. so not much to expect. Just hoping the rainy days gonna pass and people start to come to play. I wanna see new players to play because i really want paintball to be popular. When many people play then there's gonna be some competition. Yeah... that's the important thing. When many teams are formed, they gonna play each other and eventually gonna improve their skills, techniques, strategies.
We wanna see teams from sarawak improve. Not just a team or a couple of teams. We want significant number of good teams from sarawak giving hard time to current active team in MyNPL, MPOC when we meet them in a competition. Hope this gonna happen ya....
Why penisular teams are more advance from sarawak and sabah? Because they got a lot of team playing paintball.. regularly. It's true many of them are sponsored. They're sponsored because they play good. They all start from a beginner, true?
Anyway... we have to promote paintball first... then we can see it... ;)

Team D1 at matang

This is our team playing at former KSA field (they were closed now) Our first experience playing with air bunkers. This air bunkers eventually became ours.

This is me behind the coke shooting at an opponent. The opponent later was tagged by me when my fadli (from across field) and me double teamed that player.

Second game, me and boy kerol at the back. Only the two of us left vs 3 opponent. We lost the game but we've learn our mistakes and improve.

This is my former team, Team D1. From left is: Boy Kerol, Nick, Fadli (middle), Pian and Me. This team is a beginner's team. We didn't progress well as a team because of personal commitment. Today Team D1 has joined BORneo BlackHole. (Me, Boy Kerol and Fadli). This is quiet promising when we joined BlackHole. We planned to join World Cup Asia in Nov 2009. I hope we can do well in the tournament. For the time being we has not train yet. We're waiting for our filed to be completed. Maybe in February the field can be played and we'll start our training.
